Since my first wedding in Inish Beg, I’ve had a bucket list of spots I’ve wanted to get to with my couples. I figured I’d be a while getting through that list and I’d chip away at it one wedding at a time. Rachael and Michael had other plans. I can still remember the conversations with them both that morning, so you want to go to the pier out by the entrance, the bridge, stop off at the ponies (or were they donkeys… they were like regular horses but… small, not far away), catch some chickens, go into the bamboo forest, head down to the pond, oh that tree with broken limb, a couple of photos down by the water… (there was more). Two thoughts ran through my mind, “we’ll get about half of that done”, and “I’m going to break my step counter”. I was so wrong on both fronts. This was mostly due to the golf buggy and chauffeur (our top hat wearing owner of the estate), but also down to a couple who know what they want and go for it. What was most remarkable was that it never felt rushed, and I had the best fun zipping around Inish Beg with them to the next mini-shoot. Rachael and Michael were model models and the words “nah, don’t want to that” just aren’t in their vocabulary.
Hailing originally from Cork, but planning this wedding from their home in Canada, so much of them, and their family, was stamped on the day. It’s easy to pick out the homemade axe throwing contraption that delighted children of all ages (it’s weird how alcohol and axe throwing just seem to go hand in hand), or the (once again) homemade metalworked arch for the ceremony, but they really shone in their humanist ceremony. It was a truely family affair, and I don’t think they could have been married any other way. Their vows too. What started with genuinely sweet and funny vows from Rachael, was ramped up on both fronts as each passing vow from Michael mirrored Rachaels perfectly (and completely unintentionally).
Rachael and Michael, thank you so much for welcoming me into your family for the day, and for getting through that bucket list for me. We did add one item to the list though… that tandem bike we came across needs to be taken for a spin… let me check the calendar for my next visit to Inish Beg :p
